chair: Prof. Sinan Acikgoz, University of Oxford

Abstract: The southwestern part of Turkey has been a ‘confluence of states, faiths and peoples’ since Antiquity. On 6 February 2023, it was struck by an Mw 7.8 (epicentre: Pazarcik) and later an Mw 7.6 earthquake (epicentre: Ekinozu). This was followed by thousands of aftershocks, including the Mw 6.3 event on 20 February (epicentre: Uzunbag). More than 50,000 people have died and 280,000 buildings were heavily damaged. This special session will discuss the impact of the earthquakes on the historic built environment in the area. A wide-ranging discussion is planned which will feature observations on relevant seismological aspects, materials and construction techniques in the region, post-earthquake damage assessment techniques and results and numerical modelling of case studies. The session will also aim to initiate forward-looking discussions on the repair, retrofit and reconstruction of vernacular and monumental structures in the wake of destructive earthquakes in historic urban areas.
